În orice moment ar putea izbucni un război termonuclear – este declaraţia ambasadorului Phenianului la Naţiunile Unite. Ambasadorul a făcut referire la exerciţiul militar dintre Statele Unite şi Coreea de Sud, pe care l-a numit „un act agresiv”. Potrivit acestuia, Coreea de Nord este pregătită să reacţioneze la orice semnal care vine din partea Washington-ului.
Han Song-Ryol, viceministrul Coreei de Nord, a precizat că „dacă Statele Unite vor plănui un atac, noi vom răspunde cu atac nuclear preventiv.”. Acesta a punctat într-un interviu pentru BBC că Phenian-ul va continua să testeze diferite modele de rachete într-un ritm „săptămânal, lunar şi anual”.
Declarațiile liderilor coreeni vin în urma afirmaţiei președintelui SUA, Donald Trump, care a spus că Kim Jong-un trebuie „să se comporte cum trebuie”.
De asemenea, vicepreşedintele Mike Pence, a precizat că „era răbdării strategice s-a încheiat”, făcând referire şi la China, despre care Trump spunea că ar trebui să-şi „folosească sforile” şi să pună presiune asupra Coreei de Nord pentru a pune punct programelor militare nucleare.
Pe de altă parte, China militează pentru negocieri, şi afirmă prin ministrul de externe, Lu Kang, că tensiunile din Peninsula Coreeană ar trebui şterse până ce situaţia nu va escala într-un conflict de proporţii.
Relaţiile dintre Statele Unite şi Beijing s-au degradat din cauza planurilor de la Washington de a pune un sistem de apărare împotriva rachetelor în Coreea de Sud, a cărui radar i-ar permite să spioneze activitatea militară chineză. În Tokyo, unde vicepreşedintele american va ajunge marţi, prim-ministrul japonez, Shinzo Abe, a precizat că „eforturile diplomatice sunt importante pentru a menţine pacea. Însă dialogul avut doar de dragul conversaţiei este inutil”.
